Glamorgan Castle - Alliance City Schools
Designed by Cleveland architect Willard Hirsh, Glamorgan Castle was the home of Colonel William H. Morgan and his family. Col. Morgan was the son of Morgan Engineering founder Thomas Rees Morgan and instrumental to the company's success as the first American manufacturer of overhead traveling cranes.
The 50 room castle was built between 1903-05 on a 50 acre site requiring 96 train carloads of Vermont marble. It had its own power plant and included steam boilers for heating, a ballroom, library, elevator, indoor swimming pool, bowling alley and a system of telephones connecting the many rooms of the house.
The home presently houses the offices of tha Alliance City Schools Administration. Guided tours are given every Friday at 1:00 and 2:00 when the business offices are open, the first weekend of Alliance's Carnation Festival, and for special events. Please call 330-821-2100 for tour dates and times.
