So this week, starting on Wednesday, is the annual Taste of Canton on the Kresge Block (has there ever been a venue with a worse name) right on Market Avenue between 3rd and 4th St NW in downtown Canton. You know the drill … lots of restaurants, lots of food, tasting-sized samples. Deliciousness everywhere you turn. And you should not miss it. It’s even two days this year so if you can’t make it Wednesday, show up on Thursday. Or, go both days!
Many of the downtown Canton restaurants will be sharing their food. It’s an easy way to get to know them and their cuisine. But the event also creates an opportunity to explore downtown away from the big tent and see what’s special and unique in downtown Canton.
Three locally-owned jewelry stores (Gasser’s, Julz and Capestrain) offer unique pieces the mall chains don’t have. Buzzbin Art & Music Shop at 4th and Cleveland NW has a great selection of old-school vinyl and Canton-centric clothing. Two coffee shops, Carpe Diem and Muggswigz offer delicious beverage treats. Muggswigz even roasts and grinds their own beans and bakes all their own goodies. The art galleries, including Second April, Anderson and Translations Gallery, all on Cleveland Ave NW, are different enough that you should visit all three. Looking for clothing? Ace’s Menswear on Market has great apparel and even better service.
If you’re not into shopping, just take a stroll and look at the beautiful buildings and architecture. Look up at the angels atop the Courthouse and look down just about any street to see delightful architectural embellishments on buildings like the old Stern & Mann’s building or the former offices of Time Warner Cable. Plus, check out the gorgeous churches, like Church of the Savior, where President William McKinley worshiped over 100 years ago.
So after you fill your belly with pulled pork, pasta, crab cakes, chowder, sliders, sweets and ice cream, take a stroll and see what other pleasures abound downtown.
Taste of Canton is May 23-24, 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. For a list of participating restaurants and entertainment schedule, check out www.TasteofCanton.com.
