Maize Valley Market & Winery: A Wine for Every Palate

Maize Valley Market & Winery has evolved every year, creating new wines, adding numerous events for adults, as well as adding family activities your kids will love. On my recent trip to Maize Valley I was able to speak with Scott Mann about Maize Valley’s current wine selection and their plans for the future.

Maize Valley Farm Market & Winery

Maize Valley is currently growing Concord, Catawba, Crescent, Traminette, Frontemac, and Seyval grapes as well as a variety of fruits utilized to produce a wide selection of dry and sweet wines. In late summer or early fall Maize Valley plans to unveil a new dry white blend that is sure to please, so stay tuned.

Maize Valley has two wines that are Ohio gold medal winners, their Cranberry Wine and Riesling. They also have two Ohio Quality Wine recipients, La Crescent and Little Red Pecker. I was able to sample several of their wines, many of which would appeal to a variety of palettes. The Sinfully White is an unoaked Chardonnay with a very light crisp taste for a Chardonnay but still has those buttery undertones that I personally love. The La Crescent was my second sample, and I have to say my favorite. It is a dry white but very fruity, very light and somewhat reminded me of a Sauvignon Blanc. This is a great summer wine, very fresh. Moving on to something slightly sweet is their Riesling. I’m normally a dry wine drinker but this was not overly sweet. It is also very light, easy to drink and with a nice fruit flavor to it. I think it would appeal to sweet and dry white wine lovers alike.

In the red category, I tried their Merlot that just came out in April of 2012. If you like a dry red with a hint of berry flavors, this is your wine. This Merlot would easily stand up to a steak or lamb chop with its full flavor. Apple Pie premiered in December of 2011 and truly is like apple pie in a glass. It has a fresh apple flavor with hints of cinnamon. It is a sweet wine and for me I could drink this instead of eating dessert. In the winter, during one of their Vintner Dinners, Maize Valley combined this apple wine with hot cider and made a fabulous mulled wine. I almost felt like I should be putting whip cream on top of my wine glass!

You can purchase many Maize Valley wines at your local grocery stores, including their number one seller Red Neck Red, a sweet red table wine with a grapey aroma. I suggest, however, you make the trip out to Maize Valley Farm in Hartville, Ohio, to shop their store, sample their wine, and have lunch or dinner on the patio. Enjoy live music on weekend evenings. There are always events going on at Maize Valley, so check their online calendar and plan to visit soon.

June is Ohio Wine Month, so get out there and drink local wines! For more information and a calendar of events, go to MaizeValleyWinery.com. Hope to see you there.
