MAPS Air Museum, A True Gem in our own Backyard.

The MAPS Air Museum is one of our area’s not-so-hidden gems. Located just west of the Akron-Canton Airport, it houses the collection of the Military Aviation Preservation Society (MAPS), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about the history of military aviation.

The museum contains a diverse collection of aircraft and memorabilia from throughout aviation history. Aircraft are located both inside and outside the museum, and offer an up-close view to visitors, along with information about where and when the aircraft were used. Display aircraft include an F-14B Tomcat, an F4-S Phantom, an A-7E Corsair II, a MiG-17 Fresco, and several more. You can also go inside a Goodyear Blimp gondola to see where the passengers sit and how the pilot controls the giant blimp!

Also on display is the Martin Monoplane, in which Canton native Almina Martin became the first woman in the world to pilot a heavier-than-air aircraft in 1909. She and her husband built the plane right here in Stark County, and it was on display in the Smithsonian Museum before coming to the MAPS Museum–a very cool piece of Stark County history that I never really knew about!

Of course, airplanes don’t fly themselves, so there are also displays telling about the many men and women who flew in and worked on these impressive aircraft. There are exhibits about Pearl Harbor, the Tuskegee Airmen, and Rosie the Riveter, along with other more personal displays featuring the memorabilia of individuals.

The MAPS organization does more than just operate the museum: they are active in preserving numerous other aircraft, many of which will be on display at the museum in the future. Members and volunteers also lead tours, answer questions, and conduct special programming for visitors. The hangar and hall are also available to rent for special occasions.

The Maps Air Museum is located at 2260 International Parkway, North Canton, Ohio 44720. It is open Tuesday-Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors (60+), $5 for ages 6-12, and Free for kids under 6.

My Family Day Out at Canton Museum of Art

Recently, I had the pleasure of taking my kids to the Canton Museum of Art. The Museum is located in downtown Canton, and is easy to spot with the big sculpture outside! I had my two kids with me, ages 3 ½ and 6. On this particular day they were setting up for a First Friday event and had lots of kids artwork, from local schools, on display.  This was their favorite part; they loved looking at the student work.

In the main gallery was a display from the Cleveland School of Watercolor and Clay. There were many pedestals with beautiful clay pieces, and artwork hung at eye level. I kept a tight hold on both my kids hands, and the phrase “you break it, you bought it” kept going through my head! Overall they did very well, and they enjoyed the artwork.

My bachelor’s degree is in Art Education, and my ceramics undergraduate class was at the Museum, so we looked around in the classrooms. I was very excited to see my former instructor with her current class! My kids were fascinated with the clay kilns, and I was happy to explain and show them how clay goes from ground to finished artwork.

Painting with watercolorsThe museum offers a wide range of kids classes, from preschool, teens, and adults. I can personally attest to the quality of these classes!

One piece in particular, Cleveland Snow by William Joseph Eastman, stood out to us. It has a beautiful blue, beige, and red sky over the Cleveland cityscape. We spent several minutes looking at it and discussing it. Later that night, I got out my watercolor pencils, watercolor paints, brushes, and watercolor paper. We talked about different water color techniques; splattering and mixing colors were their favorites!

You may think- well you are an art teacher, so you must do this stuff with your kids all the time. These supplies are readily available at any big craft store, so head to the museum, get inspired, and have some fun!
