Located in the eastern part of Stark County, Alliance is the official home of the state flower - the scarlet carnation. The Carnation Festival consists of 10 days of events that bring thousands of visitors to the Carnation City.

Alliance also has the Science Hill School, a historic one-room school built in the 1870s. After a restoration of the schoolhouse in 1992, it is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Also on the National Register is Glamorgan Castle, now the home of the Alliance City Schools; the castle is open for tours weekdays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The community of Alliance as taken hold of its history by restoring the Haines House, a home that served as an Underground Railroad station. Among the great sites is the Mabel Hartzell Museum, a restored Victorian, Italianate home.

Shopping in the Carnation City runs the gamut from malls to specialty shops. Sports are also popular in the community, with an indoor soccer complex and several city parks. Alliance plays host each year to the national Hot Stove League baseball tournament. Alliance is the home to Mount Union College, a Division III championship football team and the college boasts strong educational standards and a strong community presence.
