Don’t Miss Your Chance to See the NYSE Closing Bell Rung on the Steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame

August 4, 2010

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010 – Russ Grimm, Rickey Jackson, Dick LeBeau, Floyd Little, John Randle, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith – will collectively ring the closing bell for the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Friday, Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. EDT from the front steps of the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

In a rare departure from the closing bell ceremony that takes place on Wall Street, the class of football legends will be the first to ring the much celebrated NYSE bell on the eve of their enshrinement into the Hall of Fame. In addition to celebrating the achievements of this year’s enshrinees, the NYSE also
recognizes PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. (NYSE: PNC) which has recently completed the successful conversion of National City customers to become the fifth largest bank in the country.

Although infrequent, a remote ringing of the bell has been held in conjunction with other major sporting events including Super Bowl XLIV and the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing China. “Bringing PNC, the New York Stock Exchange, and the 2010 Enshrinees together is truly a unique opportunity during this very special weekend to honor the great achievements made by each member of the Class of 2010,” shared Dave Motts, Vice President‐ Marketing/Operations at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“The Enshrinement weekend festivities recognize the exceptional achievements of athletes who represent the best in their field – and who have performed their best on it,” said Kevin O. Thompson, PNC regional president for Akron and Canton. “We are honored to be in such esteemed company as the Hall of Fame and this year’s enshrinees at the remote bell ceremony, as we continue our commitment to fostering exemplary achievement in the daily lives of our customers and our communities.”

The enshrinement of Grimm, Jackson, LeBeau, Little, Randle, Rice and Smith is the focal point of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival that includes 18 public events over a span of 11 days. The bell‐ringing ceremony is open to the public free of charge. The event will begin on the front steps
starting at 3:30 p.m. and conclude with the bell‐ringing at 4:00 p.m. EDT that closes trading on the NYSE for the week.

August 3, 2010

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Timken Grand Parade will be held this Saturday, Aug. 7, beginning at 8 a.m. The first grand parade was held in 1963, and it has become one of the largest of the 18 events over an 11-day period celebrating the induction of the newest Class of Enshrinees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

First Friday is Feelin’ Groovy

August 2, 2010

It’s time to don the tie-dyed shirt, the love beads and the laid back attitude of the late 1960s, when horoscopes were hot and elephant bell bottoms were cool. Feelin’ Groovy, the theme of August 6 First Friday, will embrace the purple haze of a decade and fill it with funk, psychedelic experiences and way-out fun for the whole family – and everyone is encouraged to wear flowers, peace symbols and LOVE, man.

canton-idol-julia-ciccoliniMusic will definitely be the backdrop of the evening, highlighted by Aquarius Rising, the Summer of Love Pop Orchestra (Studio 5 @ 8 p.m.) and Positively Fourth Street – playing rock and roll hits from 6-8 at the Foundations Center.

Outdoor venues include the Canton Idol singers and NOCA – a 2010 Battle of the Bands finalist, performing at the Motter and Meadows lot (across from The Palace Theatre) from 6-10 p.m. Street favorites Denny Ott (Canton Repository); Tim Griffiths (Gasser Jewelers); Shar Wilton (4th and Court); Steve Sayre (SarahCare); Matt Basso (Court Ave & 4th), Michael Bastas (Court Ave & 3rd) and Thom Ebersole (Market and 4th) will be playing throughout the evening. While indoor venues host a variety of favorites including High Energy Band (Arcadia Grille); Adam Keeler (Anderson Creative); Soft Winds Jazz Duet (Second April) and many more.

Downtown Cats, the latest addition to the public art landscape, will be dedicated at 7:45 p.m. (between 5th street and Court Ave.) immediately following the Court Avenue Art Parade. Nearby, folks can visit “Marge’s Imagery,” a fiber art exhibit at Lynda Tuttles’ Art Education Center and the Art Wolfe exhibit, “Travels from the Edge,” still at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography. And, held over by popular demand, “Prologue: Origins of a Tale by Joseph Close” will remain at Anderson Creative.

Other art on exhibit includes work by Katie Balas (Julz by Alan Rodriquez); glass work and jewelry by Lindsey Wooten (The Red Ribbon Connection); and new studios opening at 2nd April with artists Gene Barber, Bob Yost and Kiatina Parrot.

Kids will get into the funkadelic spirit with a Hoop Jam @ Studio 5 with Mystic Hoop Dance and live music by Jimmy Chesterfield and Joe Waller. Find more hula hooping and a beaded headband project from Aultman’s Wellness of Wheels; a spin-art Frisbee project at Community One Credit Union; and a Feelin’ Groovy craft at A Place to Learn. The Canton Elite Silver Stars will perform baton and dance routines on Court Avenue and the Suga Babies will do their thing at the YMCA Teen Center.

OHSAA State Football Championships to Remain in Stark County Through 2013

July 21, 2010

The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors today voted to award both Stark County and Columbus the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each beginning with the 2012 season. The vote took place during a special Board conference call meeting and was in response to a recommendation from an 11-person state football finals subcommittee.

ohsaa-logoStark County, which has hosted all or portions of the finals for the past 20 years and has two years remaining on the current contract to host the finals, has been awarded the 2012 and 2013 championships, while Columbus will host the finals in 2014 and 2015. As part of the motion to approve the recommendation, the Board also gave itself the opportunity to discuss option years for hosting the finals in the future. Stark County will continue to utilize Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium as the site for the six championship games in a two-day format rotating between the two facilities and Columbus will host all six finals at Ohio Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University also in a two-day format.

The OHSAA originally received proposals to host the state finals from groups in Stark County, Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron/Akron and Kent State, Bowling Green and Toledo, and on April 26 the finals subcommittee heard in-person presentations from all but the latter two groups. After the potential host sites were trimmed to Stark County and Columbus, members of the subcommittee visited the facilities in Canton and Massillon in Stark County on June 2 and Columbus on June 8. Meetings were held with each group the week of June 28 to finalize their proposals. The subcommittee, which conducted a conference call meeting July 14 to first attempt to finalize a recommendation for the OHSAA Board, reconvened via a conference call today before agreeing upon a final recommendation. The subcommittee was comprised of three OHSAA Board of Directors members, five OHSAA administrative staff members and three officers from the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

“We sincerely thank the six groups that were interested in hosting the state finals,” said OHSAA Commissioner Daniel B. Ross, Ph.D., a member of the subcommittee. “When we narrowed down our choices to the final two groups, the subcommittee felt that there was no question that both would do an outstanding job in hosting the championships and that both had a lot to offer. We feel like using both locations will give us the best of both worlds and that the real winners will be our participating schools and their fans.

“In Stark County, the hospitality extended to the participants and their fans is second to none and the tradition and experience they have in hosting the finals are also key factors. The subcommittee is also confident that Central Ohio has tremendous qualities of its own and that the energy and enthusiasm shown by the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and the staff at Ohio State will help us create outstanding new traditions. So we feel providing each group the opportunity to host the games will result in a win-win situation for everyone.”

“I want to thank the football finals subcommittee for its work and for conducting a thorough review of the proposals,” said Steve Stirn, president of the OHSAA Board of Directors, superintendent of the Logan-Hocking Local Schools and a member of the subcommittee. “I also want to sincerely thank the groups that submitted proposals for not only their interest but also for their tremendous efforts in putting together impressive presentations. Because the presentations from Stark County and Columbus were equally outstanding, it only makes sense that they both be given the chance to host, and the Board is in concert with the subcommittee’s recommendation.”

The championships were first held in Stark County in part in 1990 and entirely in 1991. Prior to that, 37 state football championships were held in Ohio Stadium in Columbus between 1982 and 1989. Of the 190 total state football finals held in the 38-year history of the tournament, Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium has hosted the most title games (79), Canton’s Fawcett Stadium is second with 38 and Ohio Stadium is third with 37.

“Stark County is excited to continue our 20-year relationship with the OHSAA state football championships,” said John Kiste, executive director of the Canton/Stark County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau. “This tournament has meant a great deal to our community, and we are delighted to host the teams, the coaches, the fans, the bands, the cheerleaders and the OHSAA through 2013! The proposal process has helped us take community sponsorship to an unprecedented level and continue to work with an unparalleled corps of volunteers. We continue to look forward to a strong future in working with the OHSAA.”

“The Greater Columbus Sports Commission, The Ohio State University and our local organizing committee thank the OHSAA and its Board of Directors for the vote of confidence in awarding the 2014 and 2015 state football finals to Columbus,” said Linda Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “Our community has a long history of hosting OHSAA state championship events, and we look forward to working with the OHSAA, the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association and other partners to guarantee successful state football championships in Ohio Stadium in 2014 and 2015.”

The games during the foreseeable future will be held the weekend after Thanksgiving weekend, which in most cases is the first weekend in December.

The future state football finals schedule is as follows:
2010 Dec. 3-4 Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium*
2011 Dec. 2-3 Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium*
2012 Nov. 30-Dec. 1 Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium
2013 Dec. 6-7 Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium
2014 Dec. 5-6 Ohio Stadium, Columbus
2015 Dec. 4-5 Ohio Stadium, Columbus

* Indicates hosting state finals as part of current contract
