First Friday is Feelin’ Groovy

August 2, 2010

It’s time to don the tie-dyed shirt, the love beads and the laid back attitude of the late 1960s, when horoscopes were hot and elephant bell bottoms were cool. Feelin’ Groovy, the theme of August 6 First Friday, will embrace the purple haze of a decade and fill it with funk, psychedelic experiences and way-out fun for the whole family – and everyone is encouraged to wear flowers, peace symbols and LOVE, man.

canton-idol-julia-ciccoliniMusic will definitely be the backdrop of the evening, highlighted by Aquarius Rising, the Summer of Love Pop Orchestra (Studio 5 @ 8 p.m.) and Positively Fourth Street – playing rock and roll hits from 6-8 at the Foundations Center.

Outdoor venues include the Canton Idol singers and NOCA – a 2010 Battle of the Bands finalist, performing at the Motter and Meadows lot (across from The Palace Theatre) from 6-10 p.m. Street favorites Denny Ott (Canton Repository); Tim Griffiths (Gasser Jewelers); Shar Wilton (4th and Court); Steve Sayre (SarahCare); Matt Basso (Court Ave & 4th), Michael Bastas (Court Ave & 3rd) and Thom Ebersole (Market and 4th) will be playing throughout the evening. While indoor venues host a variety of favorites including High Energy Band (Arcadia Grille); Adam Keeler (Anderson Creative); Soft Winds Jazz Duet (Second April) and many more.

Downtown Cats, the latest addition to the public art landscape, will be dedicated at 7:45 p.m. (between 5th street and Court Ave.) immediately following the Court Avenue Art Parade. Nearby, folks can visit “Marge’s Imagery,” a fiber art exhibit at Lynda Tuttles’ Art Education Center and the Art Wolfe exhibit, “Travels from the Edge,” still at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography. And, held over by popular demand, “Prologue: Origins of a Tale by Joseph Close” will remain at Anderson Creative.

Other art on exhibit includes work by Katie Balas (Julz by Alan Rodriquez); glass work and jewelry by Lindsey Wooten (The Red Ribbon Connection); and new studios opening at 2nd April with artists Gene Barber, Bob Yost and Kiatina Parrot.

Kids will get into the funkadelic spirit with a Hoop Jam @ Studio 5 with Mystic Hoop Dance and live music by Jimmy Chesterfield and Joe Waller. Find more hula hooping and a beaded headband project from Aultman’s Wellness of Wheels; a spin-art Frisbee project at Community One Credit Union; and a Feelin’ Groovy craft at A Place to Learn. The Canton Elite Silver Stars will perform baton and dance routines on Court Avenue and the Suga Babies will do their thing at the YMCA Teen Center.

Big Cats Take Over the Downtown Canton Ohio Arts District

July 31, 2010

The latest piece of public art in the Canton Ohio Arts District is pure feline fantasy. Or maybe not.

The four panel mural created by Artist BZTAT, (AKA Vicki Boatright) hangs on a brick building at 201 Fifth St. NW Canton, and it depicts four felines who actually live in downtown Canton, OH. The cats named Noah, Slick, Who, and Brewskie Butt are the companions of the artist, who owns BZTAT Studios on Fourth Street in the Canton Arts District.

Each cat, painted in a brightly colored and whimsical style, peers inward from a painted window reminiscent of the nearby Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography. The windows, each a separate 4’ X 8’ wooden panel, are painted with a city skyline, fence, and grass to highlight both the urban and residential qualities that give Canton it’s unique charm.

“I wanted to create a piece of public art that celebrates the resurgence of downtown Canton around the Arts District as well as the beauty of the entire city,” says the artist. “Also, as an animal artist and supporter of various pet rescue causes, I featured the images of my own beloved pets, who are residents of downtown Canton and were all rescued animals at some point in their lives.”

One of her cats, Brewskie Butt, has his own social media following through Facebook, Twitter and his own blog, Just Meowin’. People from all over the world have followed the development of the “Downtown Cats” mural through Brewskie’s and BZTAT’s own social media efforts on Facebook and Twitter.

The mural was sponsored by the Timothy S. Belden Charitable Fund and was coordinated through ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council.

Vicki Boatright, known as “BZTAT” (pronounced bee-zee-tat), specializes in whimsical drawings, paintings and prints of cats, dogs and other companion animals. She creates colorful customized pet portraits, which are unique in their original contemporary style and are collected by people around the world. She creates murals that follow pet motifs and other themes. You can learn more about the artist and view her artwork at www.bztat.com.

The “Downtown Cats” mural will be officially dedicated during the First Friday festivities on August 6, 2010 at 7:30 pm, immediately following the Arts Street Parade. Speakers including: ArtsinStark President and C.E.O. Robb Hankins, Tim Belden, owner of the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, and BZTAT will dedicate the mural to an audience filled with cats and dogs as well as human participants. Pets available for adoption from Friends of the Pound and Second Chance for Animals, Inc. will be present to celebrate the event, and to hopefully find loving homes.

Attendees for the Dedication will each receive a commemorative bookmark. Those who cannot attend but would like to watch online can view a live broadcast of the event on U-Stream. Tune in at 7:30 pm at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/downtown-cats-mural-dedication.

Summer in the City!

June 1, 2010

Although the official beginning of summer is a few weeks later, First Friday aficionados are prepared to commence the season on June 4, from 6-10 p.m., in the downtown Canton Arts District. Outdoor fun including a demo of graffiti artists on the Kresge Green, a surprise by the Canton Ballet on Fourth and Court, the appearance of Battle of the Bands victors, The Big Sweet at the Imperial Room, and the frivolity of Scared Scriptless crossing guards are just some of the summertime sizzlers planned for the evening.

And visual art will be hot. Emily Vigil’s “Constellations of Women” opens at Anderson Creative, while The 9 Show opens at Acme Artists. Student exhibits, including the Jackson High AP Art Show (2nd April Galerie) and the Canton Montessori School Art Show (Art Spot – Cleveland Avenue SW and 3rd) are featured along with the work of individual artists like Blu Lewis and Christopher R. Boyer (Carpe Diem); Michele Cimprich (Julz); Jack Fetzer (Gasser Jewelers); and entries to the Canton Luminaries Photography competition (Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography). Lynda Tuttle’s Art Education Center will house the Story Quilt, the Community Peace Tree and the Canton Peace Day Mural of Reconciliation.

Two anniversaries take place this evening – a 90th party at the Canton Women’s Club complete with an old fashioned ice cream social and a 1 year bash at the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, where wilderness photography by Clyde Butcher is still on exhibit.

Adults will enjoy a make-n-take ceramic project at SarahCare, while the youngsters will delight in making tissue paper flowers at Zephyr Wind Art, playing in the sand on the corner of Fourth and Court, or participating in craft projects at the Red Cross or with Aultman’s WOW van. And of course, there’s the 7:30 p.m. step off of the Street Arts Parade at the fish sculpture – fun for the whole family.

AGoG Teen Arts Studio will be doing improv, the Canton Elite Silver Stars will be hosting an open house, and poet Nicole Robinson will be the featured wordsmith at the Poetry Spectacular in the Kathleen Howland Theatre, preceded by the film, “Hustling Art — Turning your Passion into a Profession.” The film, “The Goonies” will also be shown for free at the Canton Palace Theatre at 7:30 p.m. an hour after the CSE Federal Credit Union pre-party in the Theatre lobby with Gary Rivers from My 101.7 FM.

At the Cultural Center for the Arts, Players Guild Theatre will be staging ANNIE at 8:00 p.m. (tickets available via 330-453-7617) and The Canton Museum of Art will be hosting First Stop First Friday from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

As always, music is in the air and on the streets in the District. A few samplers include Shar Wilton, the Dover High School Steel Drum Band, Thom Ebersole, Major Lee, Uptown Down, Karri Fedor & Kerosene, and American Grease. Canton Idol winners will be singing all evening.

First Friday: April Fools!

March 26, 2010

Foolish fun, the Fiddler and all the frolic that has been associated with monthly First Friday will be celebrated on Friday, April 2 in the downtown Canton Arts District from 6-10 p.m. for the April Fools! themed event. So pop on your silliest hat or mis-matched wardrobe and blend right in. Photographers from A Studio will be on assignment capturing folks being foolish. And, if that’s not enough, you can actually have your mug shot taken at The Precinct Bar & Grille.

Sleigh-of-hand illusionist Ed Ellis will be appearing in the streets all night, while magician Tim Angeloni will be at Sarah Care early in the evening. We also have a hunch that tarot card reading will be taking place at Carpe Diem. And, a reliable source (Tim Belden) tells us that the fabulous Steve McCurry photography exhibit will vanish after he closes the doors of the Joseph Saxton Gallery on Friday night.

Kids of all ages will enjoy making jester hats at Community One Credit Union and bunny masks or a jester craft with the fine folks from Aultman Wellness on Wheels, who will be stationed at The Rotary Club. Zephyr Wind Art will also feature a kids’ craft while parents are serenaded by the talents of Canton Idol performers.

It’s no illusion: New art is appearing every week in the Canton Arts District. Stop in to welcome Just Imagine Studio 2 in the 2nd April Annex; visit the Turning Point exhibit featuring wood creations by Marty Chapman, downstairs on the main floor of 2nd April, then walk down the street to Studio 5 on Fourth and see new pet art by BZTAT and new work by the artists at Acme Artists, DA Studio and Bliss Studio.

The written word is no joking matter as author Thomas Crowl will be appearing to sign his book, A Murder of a Journalist: The True Story of the Death of Donald Ring Mellett, at the Canton Daily News /Mellett Building Open House from 6-9. Also there: The Greater Canton Writers Guild and local artists & musicians. The First Friday Poetry Showcase and Contest is slated for 8:00 p.m. at the Kathleen Howland Theatre and the About Magazine reception is scheduled at the Canton Museum of Art, also the location of the Stark County High School Art Exhibition and a life drawing demo by the Canton Artists’ League.

Music ranging from a Canton Symphony Orchestra Ensemble (Joseph Saxton Gallery) to Red Hot Blues (Sheri’s Sweets) to Thom Ebersole with accordion in hand will pave the way for an evening of surprises – including a free showing of “Where the Wild Things Are” at the Canton Palace Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The Players Guild Theatre will present “The Fiddler of the Roof” at 8:00 p.m. at The Cultural Center (tickets required).

And lest we forget the spiritual significance of April 2 – Good Friday– a Stations of the Cross exhibit, featuring artwork by local artists and meditations by local writers, will be solemnly displayed at Anderson Creative Gallery. This may be the perfect appetizer before heading to Peter Shearer’s to sample wines for the Laurello Vineyards of Ohio and enjoy Lenten menu specials. Most downtown restaurants, including the Canton Women’s Club, Thorpe’s Market Avenue Grille, the Canton Club and Benders, are also offering meat-free fare.
