Art is Alive! April 9 & 10 at the Cultural Center for the Arts

April 2, 2010

A week after Good Friday and a few days before the IRS blitz, folks will be itching to kick up their heels, have some fun and hopefully buy that one-of-a-kind treasure. And, Art is Alive is the destination to deliver. This year, 85 artists will be displaying their wares, from the fantastic to the funky, on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 at The Cultural Center for the Arts in downtown Canton (1001 Market Avenue North).

Vendors from four states will line the Great Court and the Canton Museum of Art with original jewelry, paintings, prints, glass, ceramic, wood, knitwear and things that we can’t even begin to define. The Friday, April 9th event (from 5 – 11 p.m.) is an all-out street party, themed around the Holiday Inn / Stuckey’s kitsch called “Greetings from Art is Alive.” Vendors will be dressed as tourists, waitresses and goodness knows what else, as the evening sparks with fun, food, libations and a full throttle of music from area entertainers. Saturday’s show (from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) is more of the same – with admission from Friday (a reasonable $3) getting folks back in on Day 2.

Live Paint! – featuring Joseph Close, Joe Martino, Erin Mulligan, Steve Ehret and David McDowell is a new “draw” this year, as artists will create pieces on Friday night and Saturday and offer them for SILENT AUCTION, from 3-5 p.m. on April 10. Proceeds split between the artist and ArtsinStark.

Complete details for Art is Alive, including the line-up of vendors and performers, is available on www.ArtisAlive.com.

Art is Alive is hosted by ArtsinStark in cooperation with the Canton Museum of Art.
Friday, April 9: 5:00p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 10: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

First Friday: April Fools!

March 26, 2010

Foolish fun, the Fiddler and all the frolic that has been associated with monthly First Friday will be celebrated on Friday, April 2 in the downtown Canton Arts District from 6-10 p.m. for the April Fools! themed event. So pop on your silliest hat or mis-matched wardrobe and blend right in. Photographers from A Studio will be on assignment capturing folks being foolish. And, if that’s not enough, you can actually have your mug shot taken at The Precinct Bar & Grille.

Sleigh-of-hand illusionist Ed Ellis will be appearing in the streets all night, while magician Tim Angeloni will be at Sarah Care early in the evening. We also have a hunch that tarot card reading will be taking place at Carpe Diem. And, a reliable source (Tim Belden) tells us that the fabulous Steve McCurry photography exhibit will vanish after he closes the doors of the Joseph Saxton Gallery on Friday night.

Kids of all ages will enjoy making jester hats at Community One Credit Union and bunny masks or a jester craft with the fine folks from Aultman Wellness on Wheels, who will be stationed at The Rotary Club. Zephyr Wind Art will also feature a kids’ craft while parents are serenaded by the talents of Canton Idol performers.

It’s no illusion: New art is appearing every week in the Canton Arts District. Stop in to welcome Just Imagine Studio 2 in the 2nd April Annex; visit the Turning Point exhibit featuring wood creations by Marty Chapman, downstairs on the main floor of 2nd April, then walk down the street to Studio 5 on Fourth and see new pet art by BZTAT and new work by the artists at Acme Artists, DA Studio and Bliss Studio.

The written word is no joking matter as author Thomas Crowl will be appearing to sign his book, A Murder of a Journalist: The True Story of the Death of Donald Ring Mellett, at the Canton Daily News /Mellett Building Open House from 6-9. Also there: The Greater Canton Writers Guild and local artists & musicians. The First Friday Poetry Showcase and Contest is slated for 8:00 p.m. at the Kathleen Howland Theatre and the About Magazine reception is scheduled at the Canton Museum of Art, also the location of the Stark County High School Art Exhibition and a life drawing demo by the Canton Artists’ League.

Music ranging from a Canton Symphony Orchestra Ensemble (Joseph Saxton Gallery) to Red Hot Blues (Sheri’s Sweets) to Thom Ebersole with accordion in hand will pave the way for an evening of surprises – including a free showing of “Where the Wild Things Are” at the Canton Palace Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The Players Guild Theatre will present “The Fiddler of the Roof” at 8:00 p.m. at The Cultural Center (tickets required).

And lest we forget the spiritual significance of April 2 – Good Friday– a Stations of the Cross exhibit, featuring artwork by local artists and meditations by local writers, will be solemnly displayed at Anderson Creative Gallery. This may be the perfect appetizer before heading to Peter Shearer’s to sample wines for the Laurello Vineyards of Ohio and enjoy Lenten menu specials. Most downtown restaurants, including the Canton Women’s Club, Thorpe’s Market Avenue Grille, the Canton Club and Benders, are also offering meat-free fare.

First Friday: Art Works

February 25, 2010

As we slip through the winter with anticipation of tax rebates and sunshine, it may be wise to celebrate what really works in our lives — Art. All kinds: Visual and performance; projects done by students and masterpieces crafted by professionals; full blown concerts and pick-up bar bands; exhibits of famous photographers and one-night stands in local galleries. It’s your choice. It’s your evening. Art Works. First Friday, March 5 in the downtown Canton Arts District.

Art Works LogoKick off the night at 5:30 p.m. at TEAM ARTS – the starting whistle of the 12-week Annual Arts Campaign, held at the Canton Palace Theatre and offering free food and fun including performances by the Timken H.S. Marching Band, VOCI and the GlenOak cheerleaders. Then, stick around for St. Pet’s Day, the annual Celtic celebration (from 7-10) benefiting Stark Animal Rescue Groups and featuring Irish crooners like Lisa Spicer, Ashley Brooke Toussant and performances by the MacConmara Irish Dancers and the Moonflowers.

Other vocal performers through the District include Becky Daly at Carpe Diem, John Stipe at Fideli’s, Scott Paris at Anderson Creative and Seeking Stoic at AGoG Teen Gallery, plus live jazz at the Blue Olive, and the Canton Symphony Chamber Singers strolling and singing through the streets. And if footwork strikes your fancy, stop by and see how Mariah, a belly dancer, works things out at the Renkert Building while the First Friday Swing Dance gets the job done at the Metropolitan Centre Ballroom.

Twenty-eight working artists will debut the 28 Variations Project at Anderson Creative, while Dylan Atkinson, Mark Ball and Joseph Close paint LIVE at Iris. The Dreg Spot (in 2nd April Galerie) will debut its multi-media exhibit, “Static Vision,” White House Studio (also in 2nd April) will do pet painting demonstrations, and ACME Artists will be blowing out the candles and the stops for their 3rd birthday.

Youngsters and their parents can take part in Alice in Wonderland, an audience participation play from the Players Guild Theatre’s Page to Stage at the Kathleen Howland Theatre (6:00 p.m.). Other family fun includes kids’ crafts by Aultman’s Wellness on Wheels at the Rotary Club, crafts at the American Red Cross and free caricature drawings by artist Scott Hall at Community One Credit Union. For spoken word enthusiasts, a Neruda poetry & concert preview from Canton Symphony Orchestra conductor Matt Brown (7:00 p.m.) and the Poetry Showcase and contest (registration at 7:30 p.m.) will take place at the Kathleen Howland Theatre.

The work of many photographers will be for sale and on display: A Studio features Jacob Bruckner and Kristin Riecheson; Julz will feature work by Steve Ohman; Bad Girlz Jewelry will exhibit the Spring Promises photo series, and a special collection from world renowned Steve McCurry will be on the walls of the Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography.

And since work is a key theme … don’t forget to eat downtown and tip your servers. Food, too, is an art.
