Freebie Friday: Enshrinement Festival Timken Grand Parade

Timken Grand ParadeIf you’re looking for a free family event this weekend you don’t want to miss the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Timken Grand Parade! Held on Saturday, Aug. 8, beginning at 8 a.m., the parade will include many returning Hall of Famers, along with the 2009 Class of Enshrinees or their representatives including Bob Hayes, Randall McDaniel, Bruce Smith, Derrick Thomas, Ralph Wilson, Jr., and Rod Woodson. Parade viewers will be treated to the sights and sounds of 12 giant helium balloons, 22 marching and military bands, 11 floats, and 27 specialty units, as well as antique vehicles, animal units, and much, much more.

Specialty units to keep an eye out for include the Fred Hill Briefcase Brigade, giant walking flag, Ziggy helium balloon with creator Tom Wilson, Jr., and two units from Dayton, Ohio, including the Cowgirl Express Rodeo Drill Team, and the 100 youngsters comprising the Invincible Regulating Striders Marching Ensemble.

Dan Dierdorf, Canton native and 1996 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Wilma Smith, news anchor on WJW FOX 8 Cleveland, will serve as commentators for the parade. Tony Rizzo, WJW FOX 8 Cleveland sportscaster will be the “man-on-the-street” for interviews with the 2009 Class of Enshrinees and many of the returning Hall of Famers.

Freebie Friday: Massillon Museum Island Party Tonight

Carlos Jones at Massillon MuseumThe Massillon Museum’s Island Party, tonight, Friday, July 17, will be free family fun! The evening is free and open to everyone; no reservations are necessary. Guests will be admitted at 5:30; food and beverage service begins about 6:00; and Carlos Jones and the P.L.U.S. Band will entertain from 7:00 until 11:00 p.m.

The Museum’s annual event on the Museum lawn includes a pig roast by volunteers Joe Herrick and Rudy Turkal. Sidewalk supervisors are encouraged throughout the day.

A Caribbean supper of pork sandwiches, jerk chicken, pineapple salsa (the Massillon Museum’s secret recipe), fruit skewers, and grilled bananas with ice cream will be offered for sale. The cash bar will offer beer, wine, water, and soft drinks.

Carlos Jones and the Peace, Love, and Unity Syndicate deliver soulful roots reggae with lyrics that concentrate on a message of peace and harmony within the human race and the environment. The group creates a festival-like atmosphere everywhere they play, drawing crowds spanning all ages and backgrounds. The music is uplifting, incuding many original songs and an array of Bob Marley, Culture, and other recognizable covers. Voted “the Best Reggae/Ska Band” in Northeast Ohio by the Scene Magazine readers’ poll, Carlos Jones and the P.L.U.S. Band have appeared onstage with The Wailers and Ziggy Marley.

Admission will be free and open to everyone. The food and beverages will be offered a la carte. T-shirts and light sticks will also be available. Try hula hoops and limbo challenges for all ages. Plan to come for the fun, rain or shine.

Guests will enter from First Street Southeast. Picnic tables will be scattered about the lawn, but guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. Free parking will be available in the municipal parking lots, the parking deck on South Erie Street, and on adjacent streets.

Freebie Friday: Do the Mu at Massillon’s Picnic in the Park

On Saturday, July 4, the Massillon Museum will host its “Do the Mu” program from noon to 2:00 p.m. at Massillon’s Picnic in the Park, since the Museum will be closed for the holiday.

“We’re excited that our monthly ‘Do the Mu’ falls on Independence Day, so we can participate in the Picnic in the Park. We hope to introduce the Massillon Museum’s family programming to people who may not yet be participating,” said Museum Educator Jill Malusky Bacon. “This month, we’ll make patriotic crafts.”

The Museum’s free hands-on activity will be among the many free and low-cost ways to enjoy Massillon’s traditional Picnic in the Park. “Be sure to check in at the Museum’s booth between noon and 2:00, the regular time for ‘Do the Mu,’ so you don’t miss the fun,” said Bacon.

“Do the Mu,” which is always free and open to all, is regularly held at the Massillon Museum on the first Saturday of every month, where it includes arts activities and a snack. No pre-registration is required.

Freebie Friday: Magnolia Flouring Mills Turns 175 Years Old

Magnolia Flouring Mills2009 marks the 175th anniversary of the Magnolia Flouring Mills in southeastern Stark County. The five-story wooden structure was acquired by Stark Parks in 2005. This historic landmark was built in 1834 along the Sandy & Beaver Canal and has been in continuous operation since that time. Even today corn meal, animal feeds, and various seeds are sold.

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays until Noon. Group tours may be arranged by calling 330-477-3552 or plan to attend any of the periodic public tours offered by the park district. The next public tours are Thursday, July 30 at 6 pm., Sat., Aug. 8 at 1 and 3 p.m. and Sun., Aug. 9 at 1 and 3 p.m., with the latter two taking place during the annual Sandy & Beaver Canal Days Festival.

The 12.79-acre property in downtown Magnolia includes a segment of the Sandy & Beaver Canal behind the mill and Lock 24. The red wood structure is at the corner of Canal and Main Streets (Rt. 183) and will serve as a trailhead for the future Sandy & Beaver Canal Trail and the Pleasant Valley Trail, both of which were identified on Stark Parks’ Countywide Trail & Greenway Plan.

Richard Elson, founder of the mill and the village, emigrated from Virginia in 1820. He operated a flat boat on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers carrying merchandise to New Orleans. Five times he returned on foot (!) from Louisiana back to Magnolia.
