Maestro Zimmermann
The Canton Symphony Orchestra is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the 30th season of Gerhardt Zimmermann as Music Director. Such a long tenure is unprecedented for a city and orchestra of this size and the season promises to be one of the most ambitious and exciting in recent memory. The Canton Symphony is pleased to welcome KeyBank as season sponsor, a first in the orchestra’s history.
The season opens on October 10 with Maestro Zimmermann and the orchestra in one of his favorite pieces, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, a piece he says “saved his life.”
November 14 marks the return of Andre Watts, renowned pianist and one of Gerhardt’s closest friends, to perform the Rachmaninoff Second Piano Concerto.

On December 5, star soprano and Canton native Christine Brandes returns home for “Music of the Angels,” a concert with music by Handel and Mahler.
On January 22, three members of the orchestra step forward to solo roles in an “Orchestra Showcase” – violinist Nathan Olson, violist Jessica Oudin, and clarinetist Randy Klein.
Opera returns to Canton on February 27, in a fully-costumed, semi-staged performance of Rossini’s Barber of Seville, again stage directed by Thomson Smillie.
“Two Great Romantics” grace the stage on March 26 as Gerhardt and pianist Norman Krieger perform music by Sibelius and Brahms.
On April 30, the Canton Symphony visits the “Splendor of England” in a concert that features the Canton Symphony Chorus with guests from VOCI and Kent State University in Ralph Vaughn-Williams Dona Nobis Pacem.
